Soooo this update is proving to be super-mega controversial, for a few reasons.

Well actually no not a few reasons mostly just one reason, Jane has stated that she’s caucasian. Aaaand this has (understandably) pissed off quite a few people. And they have every right to! Homestuck has always been highly subject to interpretation, both due to it’s complexity and Hussie’s absolute refusal to give a straight answer to anything.

So, um, here’s my interpretation of what’s going on, and if you disagree that’s totally cool! I’d love to talk about it, and hear other opinions, but just please be polite about it.

I don’t think Jane stating she’s caucasian in the update means that she’s always caucasian when she’s normal. For one, she’s blank when she’s normal (which Hussie has stated means you can apply whatever ethnicity you want) and she’s only shown to be caucasian in trickster mode, leading me to believe she became caucasian. And another thing, tricksters are supposed to be super creepy. They’re unnerving and frightening, not just to the reader but to the characters too! So the fact that she’s caucasian is supposed to creep people out I think.

You could say that because Jake didn’t mention her skin tone when they first met up that means she looks like that naturally, but he also didn’t mention the fact that she was floating and had pink hair, so maybe it isn’t. Plus he seems pretty distressed when Jane says she’s caucasian, so there’s that too.

There’s my interpretation of what Hussie’s original intent was, now on to how he executed it. It’s pretty darn obvious the last update was supposed to mess with the people getting up in arms about the caucasian thing. Now, Hussie is a huge troll, and he will always make fun of people taking things too seriously. However, on as tricky of a subject as race, I think this update was kind of a dick move. True, some people might have been getting more worked up over this then they should have, but I know that a lot of more reasonable people were still very disappointed over it. And for good reasons which I will not elaborate on because I’m a stupid white sixteen year old who would definitely not be able to articulate them properly. So poking fun at the entire thing was kinda in bad taste, at least in my opinion.

Tl;dr: Um, I don’t think the update means Jane is canonically caucasian, at least not when she’s normal, but Hussie making fun of the controversy was kind of a dick move.

Cuz, see there’s a difference between real life and fiction. In real life you can’t hate a person for being a certain race, cuz they can’t help it you know? But in fiction if someone’s a certain race it’s because the author made a conscious decision to make them that race (unless they chose via dartboard or something, which I doubt Hussie did).

So, um, Hussie has made a point of saying the kids are aracial up till now right? So a bunch of people enjoyed having main characters they could picture having the same race as them, which is really important to a lot of people whose races don’t get depicted as main characters very often in fiction. But then when Hussie turned Jane white… well can you see how that can be really disappointing and hurtful to those people?

So, no, I don’t think people getting upset over Jane being white is racist, and, um, yeah.
